Here is a summary of all the changes:
Greens - We are only touching 3 greens:
Hole 8 - The front of this green is unusable except for when the greens are slow. This green will be rebuilt so we have at least four distinct pin areas, which helps distribute traffic and make the hole more interesting on a day to day basis. The new green will be angled so that the preferred line to the green will be from the left side of the fairway, where the relocated and improved bunker will reside. This will create some strategy and make one of our dead straight par 4s into a bit of a dogleg for those who choose to challenge the bunker on the drive to make the second shot a bit easier.
Hole 6 - The bunker work on the two right bunkers necessitates some work to remove the extensive sand buildup on the fringe. Since we are doing that work there is room to easily expand the back right of the green to make some more pin locations, which helps distribute traffic and will make the back right pin location.
Hole 7 - The collar damn in the front of the green has to be fixed. This will prevent the puddles that form on the front of the green.
Tees - A total of 20 tee areas will either be created or renovated with the end result of a longer course for longer hitters who play the black/blue tees and a shorter course for those who play the white/green tees.
4 New Black Tees (#6, #9, #12, #13).
5 New White Tees (#2, #3, #6, #8, #14)
9 New/Rebuilt Green Tees (#2, #3, #5, #6, #8, #9, #10, #13, #14)
3 Rebuilt and Expanded Tee Complexes (#1 Black/Blue/Silver/White, #6 Blue/Silver, #15 Black/Blue/Silver/White/Green)
Fairway Bunkers - In 1932 the course had 16 fairway bunkers and only 9 remain today, and most of them are poorly shaped and/or poorly located. When the rehabilitation is completed we will have 19 fairway bunkers and 14 of those will will be 'new' for a net increase of 9. These new or rebuilt bunkers will make the course more interesting and visually appealing from the tee. They will be located to challenge lower handicap players but easily avoided by higher handicap players.
7 Restored Fairway Bunkers from Original 1939 Design ( 2 on #5, 1 on #12, 2 on #13, 2 on #14)
2 New Fairway Bunkers (1 on #6, 1 on #15)
3 Relocated and Reshaped Bunkers ( #4, #8, #15 )
1 Renovated and Reshaped in Same Location ( #6 Left)
Fairways - Most of our fairways resemble an airport landing strip - straight and boring. With the new fairway bunkers we will be modifying the mowing patterns around the new bunkers. They will be wider before the bunkers to make things easier for shorter hitters as well as add some strategy off the tee. They will be narrower near the bunkers to add strategy to tee shots.
Greenside Bunkers - In 1932 we had 50 greenside bunkers and today we have 42. We also have a preponderance of holes with greenside bunkers on both the left and right. When the rehabilitation project is completed we will have 38 greenside bunkers, for a net reduction of 4.
2 Relocated and Reshaped (#2 Left, #7 Rear)
4 Renovated and Reshaped (2 on the right of #6, #7 left, #12 Right)
3 Removed ( #7 Right, #12 Left, #14 Rear)
Cart Paths - We currently have two holes, 6 and 13, where the cart paths are close to the fairway on the inside of the dogleg, where they don't belong. We simply want to move them out of play and out of the sight lines. We are also sticking with concrete to ensure that the course can be played in a cart no matter how much rain we have received.
1 Removed segment on #6 (right side of fairway)
1 New segment on #6 (left side of fairway)
2 Moved Segments (#7, #8)
1 Fairway shifted away from the cart path (#13)
Length of the Course - The goal is to make the course a bit longer for longer hitters, a bit shorter for shorter hitters, and keep the difference between the tees consistent.
From the Black tees the course will be 152 yards longer - 6,664 Yards.
From the Blue tees the course will be 92 yards longer - 6,350 Yards.
The Silver tees will no longer be a 'combo' tee and will instead have it's own dedicated teeing ground. From the Silver tees the course will be 97 yards longer - 6,070 Yards.
From the White tees the course will be 85 yards shorter - 5,575 Yards.
From the Green tees the course will be 113 yards shorter - 4,892 Yards.
Trees - In order to accomplish all of the goals above we are removing a number of trees. Some are being removed because they are old Monterey Pines and about to die (hole 13 for example. Some are being removed to improve the views (hole 5 for example). Some are being removed to make way for new tees (hole 13 for example). Many are being removed to improve turf growth (hole 12/13 for example). Most of the work was done in November 2024 when the ground was firm and would minimize damage to the course, as well as give us all spring to grow grass in the newly opened areas.
