In theory, the 12th hole is our number 2 handicap hole. In reality, #12 it is another dead straight par 4 with no strategy from the tee other than to not spray it left or right. The main reason it is the number two handicap hole is it's length. Our plan attempts to make #12 more interesting and challenging. Here is the conceptual plan for the 12th hole:
Here is how #12 looked in 1939. As you can see there was a fairway bunker on the left and right. Since the trees are now on the right we are not going to restore the right bunker. We do plan on restoring the left bunker and force longer hitters to think on their drive.
The major changes being proposed are:
Add new black tee to make 12 our longest par 4 on the course at 445 yards.
Restore fairway bunker on the left. The first bunker will be 280 yards to reach from the back tee and 300 yards to carry. From the white tees the first bunker will be 170 yards to reach. There will be ample fairway to the right of the bunkers for players to play around.
Widen the fairway before the fairway bunkers as well as near the green. For players who cannot reach the bunkers, the fairways will be wider and easier to hit.
Remove the left greenside bunker and use the natural contours of the green site so balls hit to the left roll away from the green and have an uphill chip. This area will be mowed at fairway height and will be a unique green complex for our course.
Enhance the right greenside bunker so it is fully visible from the fairway and has a bit more shape than our current, flat, muni style bunker.
With the proposed changes our 12th hole will be far more challenging and will look fantastic. We originally planned on moving the cart path but decided it was not necessary given the costs.
