Many people believe that our 6th hole is one of the best on the course. However, with the dying trees removed from the right side of the fairway we have lost a lot of the strategic integrity of the hole. Additionally, the remaining trees will all die within the next 10 years thus, making the dogleg irrelevant. We'd also like to remove the cart path on the right as having a cart path on the inside of a dogleg rewards poorly struck drives.
Here is the conceptual plan for the 6th hole:
In summary, here are the proposed changes to the hole:
Add a new black tee 30 yards behind the current black tee . This will make the hole 395 yards from the tips and with the new fairway bunker, the incentive for cutting the dogleg should be reduced.
Renovate and expand the left fairway bunker so that it is more visible from the tee and does a better job of stopping balls from going towards the 7th tee.
Remove the concrete cart path from the right side of the fairway and route a new cart path on the left side of the fairway so that it connects with the cart path behind the 7th tee. The cart path behind the green will also be removed.
Widen the fairway.
Add a fairway bunker to the right, on the inside of the dogleg. The bunker would be roughly 240 yards from the back tees and the second would be 290 yards to clear. From the white tees the right bunker would be about 200 yards away. These bunkers would make players think before trying to cut the dogleg.
Renovate the two right greenside bunkers as they were not renovated and need new sand and drainage. The bunker work on the two right bunkers necessitates some work to remove the extensive sand buildup on the fringe and the right side of the green.
Expand the back right of the green a few yards, thus increasing the size for pin locations in the back right of the green.
We did some work with photoshop and here is a sequence of photos that show what the hole will look like when the trees are gone and we remove the cart path.
And here is a video of the virtual golf hole:
