Below is an aerial photo of the course in 1939. The red circles identify fairway bunkers that were removed during WWII when membership dwindled to less than 50 members. As you can see there were more than a dozen more fairway bunkers than we have today. It should also be noted that the bunkers had very sophisticated shapes, very unlike the boring oval shaped fairway bunkers we have today. We believe these shapes show that Ed Sawyer had some sophistication as well as was probably able to utilize construction crews that worked at places like the Cal Club in prior years. We believe that Ed Sawyer was working at the Cal Club when Alister Mackenzie was doing his work there and the shapes of our 1939 bunkers show that influence.

Here is an aerial photo from 1948 where you can see that all of the fairway bunkers have been removed and the trees have begun to mature. You can also see that the 18th hole was extended into a par 5 by putting the green closer to the clubhouse. The old upper practice green was originally that green.
